John Kendrew Young Scientist Award

The John Kendrew Young Scientist Award (JKA) was launched in 2007 as an initiative from the EMBL Pensioner's Association who provided the first three year's funding for four winners from 2008-2010. The Award recognises excellence in science communication or academic achievement AFTER leaving EMBL. It is open to scientists who:

  • left EMBL 2-5 years before application deadline,
  • were EMBL postdoctoral fellows or members of the EMBL International PhD Programme (EIPP), and

The award, which is named after the first Director General of EMBL, Sir John Kendrew, consists of a cash prize of €1,000 plus the cost of travel and accommodation to EMBL Heidelberg. The winner is presented the award by a distinguished EMBL alumnus/a, and is asked to present a lecture on his/her work during the one-hour award ceremony at  EMBL lab day. He/she will meet with the Director General, Associate Director and other scientists as requested by the winner, throughout the day.

The application deadline for 2011 is Friday, 27th August 2010. Applicants must complete and submit an application form together with:

  2. a summary of their efforts since leaving EMBL in the area of science communication or technology development or general community and extracurricular activities (not more than half an A4 page)
  3. a CV, including full details of their time spent at EMBL.

Nominations deadline is 31st May 2010. Please send your name and email address or that of your nominee to Mehrnoosh Rayner. Re-application is allowed, so long as the candidate fulfills the criteria listed above.

A decision on the winner will be made at the Alumni Association board meeting in December 2010, and will be made available on this website and in the EMBL newsletter thereafter.

The European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS)

Want to help school leavers in your country pursue a career in science? The European Learning Laboratory for the Life Sciences (ELLS) has been helping alumni do just that.

Barely had ELLS been established at EMBL in 2003 when the first alumni request came from the University of Milan, asking to share know-how and help set up a similar education facility in Italy. A year later, CusMiBio was launched and has now become a well-established education and outreach facility, providing thousands of Italian students and teachers opportunities to get hands-on experience and learn about cutting-edge science.

In the meantime, ELLS staff have dealt with additional requests from alumni in Greece, Portugal, Spain and the Ukraine, where they have helped set up similar programmes.

As part of the EMBL International Centre for Advanced Training (EICAT), ELLS plans to expand these activities further. Their first focus is to identify alumni in the Scandinavian countries who would like to establish similar education projects, though they remain open to requests from all countries.
